Scholarship Program for all City Residents (youth and adults) The Annapolis Recreation and Parks Department (ARPD) maintains a Scholarship Fund for youth and adults who are City of Annapolis residents who do not have the financial means to participate in fee-based ARPD recreational programs, memberships and pool passes (scholarship funds cannot be used for facility rentals, before/after school child care and “co-sponsored” programs.) Scholarships are awarded by means of account credit, and may or may not cover the entire cost of the program(s). Details about the ARPD Scholarship Program and how to apply can be found online.

We are excited to offer more than 40 beginner swim lessons this summer for children, teens and adults! All swim lessons are R $48 / NR $60. For lesson details, please refer to pages 4 and 5 in the Summer 2023 Program Guide. You may register at the pool or at the "Pip" Moyer Recreation Center (or online if you have an established account with ARPD.) Youth Swim Lessons All youth swim lessons are 30 minutes with no more than six children per class. Held for four weeks (8 classes). Start the week of June 26. In case of inclement weather, with no guarantee, all efforts are put forth to make up canceled lessons. No refunds. For children who need to learn basic water adjustment skills including full submersion, open eyes underwater, blowing bubbles, front and back float, jumping into and climbing out of the pool. For children who are comfortable in the water and underwater. Children progress with independent swimming skills including front and back float, change from vertical to horizontal position on front and back, front and black glide kicking, tread water for 30 seconds, underwater swimming, introduction to rotary swimming, front crawl and backstroke. - Advanced Beginner Age 6-12
For children who have successfully completed Beginner 2. This class builds on fundamental skills learned in Beginner 2. Some of the skills worked on are rhythmic breathing with front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and diving. Teen Swim Lessons Age 13-17 All teen swim lessons are 30 minutes with no more than six teens per class. Held for eight weeks (once a week.) Start on Friday, June 23. In case of inclement weather, with no guarantee, all efforts are put forth to make up canceled lessons. No refunds. Class taught in the recreation pool (4 feet). Class taught in the lap pool (5 feet). Adult Swim Lessons Age 18+ Must be comfortable in 5 feet of water. Maximum six participants per class. Class meets once a week for 8 weeks. Start on Friday, June 23. Participants learn how to go under water, float on their belly and their back. Must be comfortable in 5 feet of water, going under water and floating on belly and back.

Participants use dumb bells, noodles and Kiefer Konno Wonderboards in this class to travel around the deep end. This class incorporates upper and lower body muscles simultaneously. Participants must be comfortable in depth of water 5 to 10 feet. Held daily except for Saturdays. - Mon/Wed/Fri/Sun 9:30 - 10:15 am Hector Barragan

This JumpBunch camp introduces participants to special training skills known in the world of superheroes, such as jumping over hot lava, dodging fireballs, light-saber training, scooter flying, ghostbuster tag and much more! Being a superhero means having compassion for society, a kind heart and a willingness to do good and help others - these qualities are discussed to encourage real life superhero actions. Superhero crafts are made each day. Please pack a snack and water bottle, apply sunscreen and have your child dressed in active wear clothing and shoes. Held at Collison Field. Does your child love recess? Then this is the camp for them! JumpBunch is a non-competitive camp for children that introduces a wide range of sports and games in a fun, positive manner. JumpBunch encourages healthy habits, improved coordination and confidence. Each day a different sports theme is presented that incorporates the sport and alongside craft activities. Camp themes may include football, soccer, baseball, basketball, tennis, volleyball, corn hole and/or obstacle courses. Your child will be exhausted and at pick-up each day! Non-members can attend any fitness class by paying $15 or $19 for each class (cost depends on your residency, City of Annapolis vs. Non-City Resident.) Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) hosting GED® and Adult Basic Skills classes at PMRC for free! Improve your English Skills! These classes are for students who are just beginning to study English. Classes address listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students develop English language skills for everyday life and work. Classes are Mondays & Wednesdays, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. These classes are offered at no cost to all eligible students. Contact esloffice@aacc.edu or call AACC at 410-777-2901 to get started. Earn your Maryland High School diploma by taking a class to prepare for the GED® test! This free class is for students 18 or older who do not have a high school diploma and need to prepare for the GED® exam. The class includes all four subjects required to pass the GED® test: math, science, social studies and reasoning through language arts. Classes are Mondays & Wednesdays, 6 to 8:30 p.m. Interested individuals must attend an orientation prior to registering for this class. Stanton is open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 8 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 8 am to 6 pm. Youth Rhythm & Hip Hop K-2nd grade A popular class at PMRC now brought to the Stanton Center – jazz & hip-hop moves to keep kiddos on their toes! Students learn to dance in a group setting and develop different combinations as well dance moves to develop individual personal style. This class is a great learning environment to acquire rhythm and beat. Rhythm & Hip Hop is geared for elementary school age students (kindergarten through second grade.) Friday Night Out Age 6-15 Fun, friends, field trips – these are Friday nights that the kids look forward to! A Friday Night Out trip may be educational, amusement, athletics/sports, cultural and/or social. This program exposes children to various experiences that they may otherwise not experience. Positive social skills, such as interpersonal and communication skills, are emphasized. Permission slips required; some extra fees apply. Program is led by Lassie Belt and Paulette Carroll. Fridays, 6-9 pm Get Smart Club This volunteer-based program is in partnership with St. Anne’s Episcopal Church of Annapolis. The Get Smart Club helps to strengthen the academic skills of elementary, middle and high school students. All students receive homework assistance and school project assistance. Low-performing students receive tutoring in math and reading and they also have access to 12 online computers. The program ends with a Get Smart Club Banquet to recognize students for their in-school honor roll and perfect attendance accomplishments and for their after school Homework Club accomplishments. Additionally, the Smart Board and the IXL mathematical interactive website are used to give students practice sessions in language arts and math. Mondays-Thursday, 3-6 pm Girl Scouts of Central Maryland Grades K-5 The Girl Scouts of Central Maryland want every interested girl to participate in and benefit from Girl Scouts – activities designed to empower girls! Girls who are similar in age meet at the Stanton Community Center to work on badges, plan activities, develop community service projects and have fun with each other. Enroll your future leader now! Youth Open Gym/Rec Room This drop-in program gives elementary and middle school students the opportunity to play recreational basketball, tabletop games and enjoy arts and crafts. Mon-Thu, 5-6:30 pm Adult Open Gym This drop-in program provides adults and high school students an opportunity to play recreational basketball in their leisure time. Attendees must sign in. Mon-Thu, 6:30-8 pm and Sat/Sun, 1-5 pm Computer Lab City residents can access free of charge. Volunteers are needed in the computer lab. Playgrounds – a specific page on our website includes all of our playgrounds! The playgrounds listed have Google Map links that take you to the specific locations in Annapolis. Additionally, try using the Playground Buddy app on your mobile device to see where playgrounds are located and the amenities of each one. Refer to the Playground Buddy Facebook page too. Which parks and trails do you enjoy in the City of Annapolis? Do you know where they are all located? There are many from waterfront parks to nature parks to playgrounds to sports fields. Here is a list of Parks resources: FAQs regarding the status of the Truxtun Boat Ramp – We have included a link on the City website to keep the public informed about updates on the electrical current that remains detected in the waters at and near the Truxtun Boat Ramp. Art in Public Places Commission What is the Art in Public Places Commission (AiPPC)? The AiPPC consists of nine City of Annapolis residents, one from each ward and one appointed at large, that serve for three years (one term.) Members are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by City Council. The Director of Recreation and Parks, or his/her designee, is an ex officio, nonvoting member of the commission. The Mayor may designate additional City officials or individuals to participate in an ex officio, nonvoting capacity. AiPPC adopts guidelines and procedures which identify suitable art objects for city property, and facilitate the preservation of art objects and artifacts that may be displayed in public places. The group prescribes a method for the competitive selection, acquisition and display of art, and for the presentation of performing arts, in public places. They establish other matters appropriate to the administration of the placement of art or the promotion of the performing arts in public places. AIPPC artist reception to be held Saturday, June 24! Shiles Studio presents Painting through the Ages at the "Pip" Moyer Recreation Center now through June 24! Under the direction of Gay Shiles (owner and artist), Shiles Studios presents a collection of works by studio artists. Gay has more than 60 years of experience in the art world, including graduating with honors from the prestigious Wiesbaden Institute of Art. Established in 1995, Shiles Studio focuses on the fundamentals and whimsy of creating unique works of various subjects in a multitude of media including oils, watercolors, watercolor batik and pastels. Many artists presenting have been associated with the studio for more than 20 years, while some are new artists presenting for the first time. The studio will host an artist reception on Saturday, June 24 from 1 to 3 pm at the "Pip" Moyer Recreation Center. Local Annapolis artist Audrey Lee (Gallery 57 West, Annapolis Arts Alliance board member and former Shiles Studio artist) will provide an artist talk along with studio artists who will answer questions about their works of art. Original artwork, as well as prints, are for sale. Additional prints and crafts will be available at the reception. Plus enjoy live music by local musician Steve McCoy and light refreshments. Recreation Advisory Board What is the Recreation Advisory Board (RAB)? The RAB acts in an advisory capacity to the Department and makes recommendations concerning the Department's budget, activities, programs, facilities and public relations. The RAB consists 11 residents of the City who have a demonstrated interest in the activities and programs of the Department of Recreation and Parks. Members are appointed by the mayor and confirmed by a majority vote of the City Council for a term of three years. The Director of Recreation and Parks and the Director of Planning and Zoning serve as ex-officio, non-voting members of the RAB. The RAB agendas and minutes are online for further information.
