20-0295-Fraud- 1300 block of West Street
On 1/26/21 at approximately 1:57pm officers responded to the lobby of the Annapolis Police Department for a reported fraud. The victim advised that on 9/3/20 she wrote and mailed a personal check to a local church. She later discovered that the check was never cashed by the church and instead an unknown person intercepted the check and cashed it. Total loss value was $850.00.
21-0303 - Shots Fired - 1400 block of Tyler Ave.
On 1/26/21 at approximately 7:57pm officers responded to the 1400 block of Tyler Avenue for a report of shots fired. A broadcast of a suspect vehicle was given out and a short time later the vehicle was stopped. After searching the vehicle officers located a loaded handgun under the driver's seat. The handgun was recovered and the driver who was identified as Wendell Turner was arrested. Turner was charged accordingly and the handgun was properly submitted into evidence.
Scam Alert
Recently we have noticed an increase in regards to reported scams. We have responded to numerous reports where the victim/ reporting person advised that they were scammed.
In some cases the victim/ reporting person advised that they were contacted either via telephone or email and the scammer requested that they purchase gift cards and provide the number on the back of the card. If you should receive a call or email similar in nature please gather as much information from the individual as you can to include the phone number and or email address and report it to the Annapolis Police Department immediately. At no time should you purchase any type of gift card and provide the information on the card to an unknown person.
Please also be aware of tax scams as tax season approaches. If you're not certain that the person contacting you is legitimate, you should not provide them with personal information such as your SSN, name, DOB, banking information or address.
In any situation where you feel that you have been contacted by a scammer or have been scammed please to not hesitate to contact the Annapolis Police Department at 410-268-4141.
