City Leaders to Host Community Meeting at Eastport
Fire Station to Discuss Solutions to Gun Violence
ANNAPOLIS, MD (February 13, 2020) – City residents are encouraged to attend a community meeting at the Eastport Fire Station on Monday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. to discuss recent gun violence. Mayor Gavin Buckley with Alderman DaJuan Gay (Ward 6), Alderman Ross Arnett (Ward 8) and Alderwoman Rhonda Pindell Charles (Ward 3) will host the meeting, giving residents an opportunity to speak directly to decision- and policymakers about ideas for finding solutions and concerns for public safety.
The meeting agenda will include a presentation by Police Chief Edward Jackson who will be there to answer questions and discuss short- and long-term action from the Annapolis Police Department (APD), including community policing initiatives. City Manager David Jarrell, as well as community and faith-based leaders, will be on hand to hear resident concerns.
State Sen. Sarah Elfreth, State Del. Alice Cain and State Del. Shaneka Henson are expected to participate in the discussion.
The meeting was called due to gun violence in the area of the 1100 to 1299 block of Madison Street. On Monday (2/10), two incidents of shots fired, one at 7 p.m., the other at 2 a.m., had officers responding, although no victims or suspects were found. On Tuesday (2/11), officers responded to shots fired around 11:30 p.m. At that time, responding units found a 29-year-old male with injuries consistent with being shot. He was treated at an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
“We have got to find better ways to resolve our differences,” said Mayor Gavin Buckley. “I know this isn’t a policing-only issue or an issue that faith leaders or elected officials can solve on their own. That is why I want to hear from community members. We’ve all got to work together to find a way forward.”
Annapolis Police are asking for the public’s help in the Tuesday night incident. Those with information should contact APD detectives at 410-260-3439 or call Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP and submit an anonymous tip.
