Dr. Sally Nash Confirmed as Annapolis’ Director of
Planning & Zoning; Swearing-in on Friday at 2 p.m.

ANNAPOLIS, MD (February 12, 2020) – Mayor Gavin Buckley will return to his duties on Friday and one of his first will be to swear in Dr. Sally Nash as the City’s Director of the Department of Planning and Zoning. Dr. Nash is currently in the position as acting director. The swearing-in will take place in City Council Chambers on Friday, February 14 at 2 p.m.

Dr. Nash has worked for the City of Annapolis for 14 years this April. She began as a Planner after earning a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2013, she became the City’s Chief of Comprehensive Planning. She has been the acting director since the April 2019 departure of then-Director Peter Gutwald, who left Annapolis to head the Planning Department for Baltimore County.

The City conducted a nationwide search for a replacement, according to Human Resources Manager Tricia Hopkins. The Annapolis City Council confirmed Dr. Nash at their Monday, February 10 meeting.

Dr. Nash was offered the permanent position as director at the end of 2019. The position of Director of the Department of Planning and Zoning is nominated by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council. The position is supervised by the City Manager.

“As we move into our Comprehensive Plan 2020 process, I’m thrilled to have Sally directing those efforts and the efforts of the department,” said Mayor Gavin Buckley. “In addition, she has a lot of ideas about getting more citizen feedback, making sure code enforcement is fair and consistent, honoring the city’s heritage, and protecting the environment.”

City Manager David Jarrell echoed the praise. “I look forward to having the position permanently filled, and Dr. Nash is the right person at the right time,” Jarrell said.

Dr. Nash will earn $149,467 per year.

Dr. Nash will be sworn in on Friday, February 14, 2020, at 2 p.m. in City Council Chambers at City Hall, 160 Duke of Gloucester, Annapolis.
