Mayor Gavin Buckley Statement on Senate
President Mike Miller’s Service to the State of Maryland

ANNAPOLIS, MD (August 25, 2019) – On Thursday, Senate President Mike Miller announced that he will step down from his role as Senate President while remaining a State Senator representing the people of the 27th District. President Miller served in that role since 1987, longer than any other Senate President in the history of the United States.

His longevity as Senate President is inspiring.

But, Marylanders should also be proud of all that he accomplished in his role as leader of that chamber.  He worked to pass environmental legislation to restore the Chesapeake Bay. Long before leaders in other states were thinking about climate change and the legacy that we would leave our children here on planet Earth, Senate President Miller was not only thinking about it, but acting to make a difference. He also worked to pass stringent gun legislation, legalize same-sex marriage and end the death penalty in our state. These policies make a difference in the lives of everyday Marylanders every day.

He served as leader of the chamber during times of Democratic governors and Republican ones, from William Donald Schaefer to Larry Hogan, finding ways to work across the aisle to get things done for the people of our state.

While he will continue to work on issues as the Senator from the 27th District, serving on a committee for the first time in three decades, I am sure that President-elect Bill Ferguson will continue to seek his guidance.

I congratulate Senator Ferguson, of Baltimore City, on winning the votes of his Senate peers. His elevation to Senate President is an accomplishment in and of itself. I look forward to his leadership in the coming years.
