Mayor Buckley Names Police Chief Edward C. Jackson,
Fire Chief Douglas Remaley, and OEM Director Kevin Simmons
as “Annapolis’ Public Safety Team”
Annapolis, MD (July 18, 2019) – Mayor Gavin Buckley announced the nomination of the City’s “Public Safety Team” on Thursday. They are Edward C. Jackson for Police Chief, Douglas Remaley for Fire Chief, and Kevin Simmons for the Director of the newly created Office of Emergency Management department.
The City will host a community meeting to introduce the new team to the public on Monday, July 29, 2019 at 7 p.m. at the “Pip” Moyer Recreation Center, 273 Hilltop Lane, Annapolis. The public is invited to attend. All three, along with Mayor Buckley, will be available to address the public and speak with residents.
The appointments will become official upon City Council confirmation. Buckley has convened a special City Council meeting on July 31, 2019 at 3 p.m. in City Council Chambers for consideration of confirmation. Jackson and Simmons will be sworn in immediately if confirmed. Remaley will be sworn in on August 26, when current Fire Chief David Stokes steps down.
“We wanted a team that would work well together and have a vision to serve this community,” Mayor Buckley said. “I believe we have found that team.”
The police chief was selected through a process that included four community meetings that informed the qualifications and search criteria. A diverse interview panel was appointed by the Mayor to review resumes, interview candidates and winnow the selection to the final two candidates. Buckley made the final selection on July 17. Both Remaley and Simmons, currently Deputy Fire Chiefs, are being promoted internally. All three positions are supervised by the City Manager.
