Mayor Buckley Issues Proclamation to Call  
Special Election for Ward 6 Council Vacancy

Annapolis, MD (May 5, 2019) – Mayor Gavin Buckley issued a City Proclamation on Sunday calling for a Special Election to fill the Ward 6 City Council vacancy created when Alderwoman Shaneka Henson resigned after being nominated to fill the District 30A House of Delegates seat.

Interested candidates have until May 13 to file for the seat. Certificates of Candidacy will be available on the City website (www.annapolis.gov) beginning Tuesday, May 7.

The Primary Special Election will take place on Tuesday, June 4, 2019. The Special Election will take place on Tuesday, July 2, 2019. Voting hours will be 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The polling places for both elections will be the Eastport Community Center, 1014 President Street, Annapolis, MD 21403 and Mt. Moriah AME Church, 2204 Bay Ridge Avenue, Annapolis, MD 21403.

By City Code candidates for the City Council must live in the Ward they seek to represent for a period of at least six months. They must be a registered voter (for at least one year preceding their election) and must be a affiliated with the party whose nomination they seek. Please see City Code for other candidate requirements.

The term of the elected Alderperson for Ward 6 will serve out the remainder of Henson’s term (until November 2021).

“We are looking forward to the residents of Ward 6 sending us someone every bit as outstanding as Alderwoman Henson,” said Mayor Buckley.
