[ARCHIVED] Mayor's Statement Regarding Fatal Shooting in Bay Ridge Gardens

Annapolis, MD (10-31-18) – On Tuesday, October 30, Kory Johnson, 27, of Annapolis was shot and killed on Bens Drive in Bay Ridge Gardens in Annapolis. Mayor Gavin Buckley has issued the following statement on this first murder since November 2017 in the City of Annapolis:

“I am saddened and heartbroken to learn of the senseless violence that has taken a human life, Kory Johnson, in our city last night. The City of Annapolis’ condolences and prayers are with the families, neighbors, and children of Bay Ridge Gardens, who suffer the profound sense of powerlessness, loss, and fear that visits us when tragedy strikes. I join you in that sorrow.

“Every homicide is a tragedy that traumatizes neighborhoods and the people who live there. We must continue to combat the root causes of crime to deliver on our goal to bring community safety to all Annapolitans.

“Our efforts have always focused on interrupting violence now as it is occurring and preventing future violence, by investing in people and in communities. Our holistic approach of addressing the complex and multiple risk factors associated with violence in our communities has contributed to a significant decline in homicides this year. We are determined to continue building stronger relationships by improving the health and vitality of all our communities throughout Annapolis.

“As the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. so eloquently reminded us, ‘Never succumb to the temptation of bitterness.’ We will heal and we will move toward preventing the senseless act of taking another’s life.”
