Mayor Michael Pantelides announced that the City of Annapolis and Back Creek Conservancy will partner to celebrate Geographic Information Systems Day (GIS Day) on Wednesday, November 15th by hosting an event: Smart And Spatial for The Bay: A Conservation GIS Showcase.
GIS Day is for users of GIS technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society. Held each year on the Wednesday of National Geographic Society’s Geography Awareness Week (Nov. 11–17), GIS Day is a global event that celebrates GIS technology, which brings countless benefits to the world.
This GIS Day celebration will be a conservation GIS showcase: Smart and Spatial for the Bay. In the Chesapeake Bay region, natural resource managers and users apply GIS to bring all the data related to the health of the Bay together to gain deeper understanding of the problems, and help inform decision making to protect and restore this resource.
The GIS Day Event will be held on November 15th from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Pip Moyer Recreation Center, located at 273 Hilltop Lane in Annapolis.

The program includes five short presentations on current Chesapeake Bay oriented GIS services and products, followed by a table top information fair and then a post event Happy Hour at The Boatyard Bar and Grill. The program includes presentations from the following organizations: City of Annapolis; US Geological Survey, Chesapeake Bay Program Office; Maryland Environmental Service; Chesapeake Conservancy; Chesapeake Environmental Communications; Chesapeake Commons.
The City of Annapolis has shown innovative application of technology, data collection, geospatial information visualization, and thoughtful leadership through GIS technology use in many aspects of City government. The Back Creek Conservancy has new capacity in GIS, and is now visualizing data through interactive web mapping.
