Earlier this year, Annapolis Mayor Michael Pantelides requested Department of Public Works Director David Jarrell to begin meeting with local downtown businesses to gather their input on how the important and necessary Main Street reconstruction project can be accomplished with the least possible disruption to the businesses’ customers and daily operations.
Over the past several months, a number of meetings and one-on-one conversations have taken place in an effort to educate the business owners about the project and to continue gathering ideas on how the city can proactively promote the businesses by inviting residents and visitors downtown during the construction process.
Mayor Pantelides plans to work with the businesses to schedule several festivals, sidewalk sales, and other promotional events to advertise Main Street’s availability during the street reconstruction work.
Two Phases for This Nine Month Project:
Phase 1: Installation of new water services connections for businesses that wish to have fire protection sprinkler lines
Phase 2: Street reconstruction, including brick removal, demolition of the existing road base, and placement of new base and bricks.
What is included in Each Phase:
Phase 1: Water Service Installation – Installation of new water service connections in front of businesses that do not have fire protection sprinkler systems. Phase 1
is scheduled to begin in January of 2018 and be completed in March of 2017. Sidewalks remain open throughout the entire project. Construction will take place in front of roughly 50 businesses, with limited parking disruption and street closures. The work on the connections will start at the top of Main Street and work down Main Street.
Phase 2: Street Reconstruction – Street reconstruction, including brick removal, demolition of the existing road base, and placement of new base and bricks. Sidewalks will remain open throughout the entire project. Phase 2 is scheduled to begin in April of 2018 and be completed in September of 2018.
Phase 2 of the project will be divided into three sections, with each section being completed before the next section begins. The sections are:
- Top of Main Street which includes Church Circle to Conduit Street
- Middle of Main Street which includes Conduit Street to Francis Street
- Bottom of Main Street which includes Francis Street to Memorial Circle
Breakdown of the street reconstruction project:
April 2018 – Work will begin on the north lane of the Church Circle to Conduit Street section, with one lane open, and no street parking available.
May 2018 – Work will begin on the south lane of the Church Circle to Conduit Street section, with one lane open and no street parking available.
June 2018 – Work will begin on the north lane of the Francis Street to Memorial Circle section, with one lane open and no street parking available.
July 2018 – Work will begin on the south lane of the Francis Street to Memorial Circle section, with one lane open and no street parking available.
August 2018 – Work will continue on the top and middle sections, which include Church Circle to Francis Street, with both sections closed. The Memorial Circle to Francis Street section will be open for both parking and traffic.
September 2018 – Work will continue on the two bottom sections, which include Conduit Street to Memorial Circle, with both sections closed. The top section, from Church Circle to Conduit Street, will be open for both parking and traffic.
The project will be completed by the end of September 2018.
The city will continue to stay in touch with local businesses and constituents leading up to the start of construction in January 2018. The Downtown Annapolis Partnership DAP) is working in tandem with the city, ensuring that the lines of communications remain open before, during, and after the construction project.
