[ARCHIVED] Response from Harbormaster’s Staff Credited with Open Water Rescue

Annapolis, MD (4-13-17) Annapolis Mayor Michael Pantelides applauds the Harbormaster’s Office for their quick response in a recent water rescue.

Just before one o’clock in the afternoon on April 8th, a member of the Harbormaster staff, Andrew Patterson, received several calls from civilians reporting an over-turned sailboat in the Annapolis Harbor, near the Chart House. Arriving at the scene, he found two teenagers from Annapolis High School in the water struggling to get their sailboat back upright and in a safe position. The winds were blowing about 23 mile per hours with water temperatures at approximately 50 degrees.

Patterson’s concern was that the teens were experiencing fatigue, along with hypothermia, due to the gusty winds and water temperatures.  Both teenagers and their boat were safely pulled from the water without incident.

"I am incredibly proud of the rapid response from Mr. Patterson,” Mayor Pantelides said. “This is one more example of how the Harbormaster’s Office works year-round to protect our city waters and those who enjoy its recreational benefits.”

The Harbormaster's Office ensures the safe and enjoyable use of the city's waters including parts of the Severn River, Back Creek, Spa Creek, and Weems Creek. The Harbormaster manages public and private moorings, 1,500 feet of bulkhead, 18 slips at City Dock, more than 17 miles of shoreline, as well as various park docks and street-end landings.  The Harbormaster also enforces Boating Law and City regulations.

If boaters need to reach the Harbormaster’s Office, they can use VHF channel 17 and the public can call 410-263-7973.
