WHO: The City of Annapolis Annapolis and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade Committee


WHAT:
 The 3rd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and Live Concert

The City of Annapolis and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade Committee are proud to sponsor the 3rd Annual Annapolis Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Parade.


WHEN: Monday, January 16, 2017 at 12 noon 


WHERE: Downtown Annapolis starting on West St. at Amos Garret Blvd. and proceeding around Church Circle and up Main St. to the Market House.


WHY: Taking place in downtown Annapolis, the parade commemorates the life and work of Dr. King.  


WHAT WILL HAPPEN:
  The parade will be lead by United States Naval Academy Marching Band and the Annapolis Police and Fire Honor Guards.  Annapolis Mayor Michael Pantelides will be with the United States Naval Academy Midshipmen and Alderpersons, along with community organizations, are also in the parade. There will be horses for the first time, as well as exotic and classic cars.


Parade Grand Marshal: Miss Helen Chambers

Ms. Chambers was the founder of Head Start in Anne Arundel County in 1965, over 50 years ago.  Working with the Anne Arundel Community Action Agency, she served as its first director.  She later formed the Little VIP Day Care Center in Parole, starting many local young people on their educational journey having grown up to graduate from top tier colleges including Duke University, George Washington University, University of Maryland College Park and others.


Parade Honorees:

We are also honoring some future stars. 

•    Brandon Harris is a 17-year-old who attends Indian Creek and serves as is the president of his class, is on the varsity soccer team, and he started the baseball program at his school. Most recently, he has created a mentoring program called “Brandon’s Coalition for Success” and mentors disadvantaged peers who live in public housing.  Brandon is an aspiring physician and Harvard University is his college of choice.  

•    Young Dylan is a 7-year-old rapper with a national reputation.  He attends elementary school here in Annapolis where he is known by his family name of Dylan Gilmer.  He has performed at a Toronto Rapters game, appeared on the Ellen Degeneras Show and appears regularly on a nationally syndicated TV show. 

•    Maria Casasco is a long-time advocate for the Hispanic community in Annapolis and around the State of Maryland.  She was named a Champion of Hope by the Baltimore Sun in 2001.  Previously with the Anne Arundel County Health Department she now serves her community as Grants Administrator & Hispanic/Latino Liaison to the Anne Arundel County Executive.


Live Post-Parade Concert: Join us at the Market House Plaza after the Parade!

•    Kirby Lane, a ocal R&B artist / Neo-Soul group.  Also back for the second year will be the gospel band, 

•    Remnant, a local gospel band back for the second year! 


Parade announcer: Jeff Brown, Radio Personality of Howard University Radio WHUR "The Quiet Storm"


VISUALS: Marching bands, cowboys and a cowgirl, local businesses, local officials and candidates, classic cars and joy on children’s faces!


INTERVIEWS: Available during lineup (10:30am-noon) along Amos Garrett Blvd. before the parade.  Also post parade as folks disband at the Market House.
