City to Honor Author, Producer, and Screenwriter Rodney Barnes with Key to the City at Maryland Hall Event on June 24, 2022
Annapolis, MD (May 25, 2022) The City of Annapolis will honor Annapolis native Rodney Barnes with a Key to the City celebration at Maryland Hall (801 Chase Street, Annapolis) beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 24, 2022. The event will include a special screening of HBO’s “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty,” which Barnes produced. Following the screening and presentation of the Key to the City, Barnes will participate in a Q&A with the audience moderated by William Rowel.
Rodney Barnes was born and raised in Annapolis and attended Howard University. He moved to Los Angeles in 1995 to pursue a career in screenwriting. His career took off when he worked as executive story editor on the Damon Wayans sitcom, “My Wife and Kids” from 2003 to 2004. His subsequent credits as a writer include, among others, “Everybody Hates Chris,” “The Boondocks,” the 2016 Oscars, and the 2017 BET Awards as well as Marvel’s “Runaways,” and STARZ’s “American Gods.”
As a producer, Barnes’ shows include “Legends of Chamberlain Heights,” “American Gods,” “Wu-Tang: An American Saga,” and his most recent production, a 2022, 10-episode HBO series, “Winning Time: the Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.”
A highly successful author of graphic novels, Barnes is also the talent behind the series, “Killadelphia,” as well as the “Star Wars: Lando” series, “Quincredible,” and “Army of Darkness.”
Barnes has earned a Peabody Award and an American Film Institute (AFI) Award. He has been nominated for a BET Comedy Award, the NAACP Image Award and the Writers Guild of America Award.
