Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley Named Vice Chair
of U.S. Conference of Mayors Standing Committee
on Tourism, Arts, Parks, Entertainment and Sports

ANNAPOLIS, MD (April 8, 2022) – Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley was recently named Vice Chair of the United States Conference of Mayors Committee on Tourism, Arts, Parks, Entertainment, and Sports (TAPES). The committee is one of 11 standing committees and is responsible for developing national policies in the focus area for the U.S. Conference of Mayors. The chair of the TAPES committee is Mayor Hillary Schieve of Reno, Nevada. Mayor Buckley’s specific focus will be tourism.

Mayor Buckley first became active in the U.S. Conference of Mayors organization following the tragic workplace shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper in 2018 that killed five. Mayor Buckley attended a national meeting and met with other mayors who had experienced mass shooting incidents, including Joseph P. Riley of Charleston, SC, who was mayor when nine were killed in 2015 during Bible study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, and a few months after the Annapolis shooting, he met with Bill Peduto, who was mayor during the time of the Pittsburgh Tree of Life synagogue shooting that killed 11.

“When we are together with mayors from all over the country, nobody asks if you are a Democrat or a Republican,” Mayor Gavin Buckley said of his experience with the US Conference of Mayors. “We are there working together to solve problems. I think it is because mayors are the elected officials closest to the people. I see my constituents on the street, at the grocery store, in the pickup line at school. We hear the problems of our residents and we work to find solutions.”

Mayor Buckley will participate in leadership meetings and special events as well as participate in meetings of the TAPES committee. The elevated role acknowledges Mayor Buckley’s leadership among United States mayors in the area of arts and tourism.
