Mayor Buckley: On Elections and the Importance of Voter Participation in Annapolis
“I am proud of Maryland and Annapolis for turning out and voting in what I believe will be record numbers. While we are only looking at official General Election Day returns right now, I saw lines at early voting and we had a huge number of people who voted by mail. Participation by voters is an important ingredient for a functioning democracy. Thank you.
I also want to thank the poll workers and election officials as well as participants from both parties who worked to turn out their voters. This has been a challenging year. Holding a presidential and congressional election during a pandemic is not ideal, but we demonstrated that we can maintain our democracy and protect the public health in the most challenging of circumstances.
Finally, the reported vote out of Maryland showed that our state stands for inclusion; that we vote to protect environmental concerns and our beautiful Chesapeake Bay; and that we care about public safety. We need to continue having a conversation, a part of which is having the public and elected officials listen to one another in a constructive way. I know that we can come together after this divisive election.”
