Media Statement: Mayor Gavin Buckley
on the Passing of Geoff Ewenson

ANNAPOLIS, MD (October 15, 2020) – Julie and I were saddened to learn the news of the sudden passing of Annapolis professional sailor Geoff Ewenson. On behalf of my family and the residents of the City of Annapolis, we extend our deepest condolences to his widow Mary Iliff Ewenson, his family, friends, and the Annapolis sailing community.

Geoff was well known in sailing circles, not just in Annapolis, but around the globe. He was an expert sailor, tactician, and navigator.

He was a top-ranked sailor in the Finn class (heavyweight dinghy) and was named to the US Olympic Sailing Team for both the 2004 Athens and the 2008 Beijing games. He was a tactician on numerous boats over the years, earning a solid reputation. In 2018, Geoff took first place skippering a Viper in the Sperry Charleston Race Week regatta. Last year, he took second on a Viper at the World Championship Regatta.

Geoff had recently turned 50 and I know for many people, myself included, this news feels raw and painful because it doesn’t seem possible to lose such a vibrant soul at such an age.

Our sympathies go out to the family and friends of Geoff. He was loved and I know he will be missed.
