Mayor Buckley: Never Forget – On the 19th Anniversary of Sept. 11

Today is the 19th Anniversary of September 11, 2001, a day that most Americans remember very clearly. I happened to be about ten blocks away from the World Trade Center on that day. My wife and I were staying in New York City to celebrate our anniversary.

We heard that morning that the tower had been hit by a plane. Outside of our hotel, we saw people walking around covered in ash. I remember people coming into the hotel and trying to get a room, knowing they weren’t getting out of New York for a while.

To be in New York City, unable to get back to Maryland for those few days, was surreal. The streets were desolate. People walked around like zombies. Everything was shut down.

These memories are seared in my mind forever.

At that moment in time, the whole world’s hearts were broken for America and New York. We seemed unified in our grief and horror of the events of that day.

I will never forget September 11, 2001 as I think of all the victims and the heroism of the first responders. Today we see our first responders in action with the same bravery in their response to Covid-19. I thank them for their service to our communities.
