Sustainable Annapolis is taking part in the legislation passed into the Annapolis City Code Chapter 8.04.010 - Maintaining Animals. This page provides information on resources that can help educate residents on proper care and management of urban backyard chickens.
Application
The Backyard Chickens in the City of Annapolis Permit Application (PDF) and information packet is available to all residents that are interested in keeping up to five hens, not roosters, on their property as pets. Information on the permitting process.
Adopting Chickens
Much like adopting Fido or Mittens, you have the option to adopt hens rather than purchase them. There are several rescues in the area as well as online sources that can help you find your perfect match.
If you decide that you would like to purchase your chicken, look for reputable retailers where the birds are National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) Certified. This certification verified that the chickens you receive are free of certain diseases. For more information on NPIP, please contact Kim Arnold at the Maryland Department of Agriculture at 410-543-6610.
