Emergency Medical Services
Life-in-a-Bag Form
The Annapolis Fire Department's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Division exists to provide emergency and non-emergent health care, rescue and related services to the citizens and visitors of the City of Annapolis, and to provide medical transportation to the appropriate health care facility. It is the Department's philosophy to maintain the highest level of service to the City of Annapolis and its citizens. The goal is to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with medical emergencies and traumatic injuries through a comprehensive program of strategic planning, training, prevention, evaluation and support of the department's operational personnel.
The EMS Division is overseen by the Battalion Chief of Special Operations, who is supported by the EMS Captain. All EMS providers follow the Maryland State Protocols as published by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services System (MIEMSS). The providers operate under our EMS Medical Director, Dr. Robert Heller. Dr. Heller joined our staff on July 1, 2004, he is currently one of the Emergency Department Physicians at Anne Arundel Medical Center. In addition, the EMS Division is fortunate enough to have Dr. Michael Clemmens as Associate Medical Director for Pediatrics. The Medical Directors assist in training and re-certification as well as with the Quality Assurance program.
Life Support Providers
The Annapolis Fire Department has a complement of career Basic Life Support (BLS) providers and Advanced Life Support (ALS) providers that are cross-trained as firefighters. Since 1975 the Annapolis Fire Department has grown from 7 ALS providers to 51 ALS providers. The department now operates 3 ALS transport units, 1 BLS transport unit and 1 ALS Engine with 1 EMS Lieutenant per shift.
The EMS Division also operates 2 specialty units. During special events the EMS Division can field 2 ALS Bike Medic teams, which allow the medics to have more mobility in large crowds. Also, the Division operates a tactical medical team, which provides medical coverage to the Annapolis Police Department's SWAT team. 2015 proudly marks the 40th Anniversary of Advanced Life Support Care being provided by the Annapolis Fire Department.
