MainStreets Annapolis Partnership Celebrates Small Business Saturday

Creates Holiday Pocket Park

Annapolis, MD (11-22-11) Annapolis Mayor Joshua J. Cohen requests residents support Small Business Saturday and buy local on November 26.

Governor Martin O’Malley proclaimed November 26 as Small Business Saturday in Maryland and community business leaders are ready to show their support as well.

On Saturday, members of MainStreets Annapolis Partnership (MAP) will gather at 9:30 a.m. to dedicate a Holiday Pocket Park at 122 Main Street. They will be joined by City Council members for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to kick-off the holiday shopping season and encourage residents and visitors to patronize local merchants.

“We want to remind the thousands of area residents that shopping ‘small’ at their favorite local stores can result in ‘huge’ benefits to the Annapolis economy,” Mayor Cohen said.  “For every dollar spent at a locally owned business, 68 cents remains within the community. Annapolis is a magical place during the holidays and has an enduring appeal that brings people back year after year.”

“We are so fortunate to have such a diverse and unique mix of shops, restaurants, galleries and historic sites to entice holiday shoppers to experience all our MainStreets business districts, from downtown to Eastport to West Annapolis,” says Steve Samaras, owner of Zachary's Jewelers and President of the MainStreets Annapolis Partnership.  “I know the MAP Holiday Pocket Park will be a wonderful spot for customers to sit, rest and enjoy the carolers during the holidays.”

The park installation was made possible through the generous donation of the space by the Blonder family with additional support from Homestead Gardens, the City of Annapolis and hundreds of hours of volunteer effort to clean up and decorate the space.

Stop by the park anytime between November 26 and January 1.  For more information on the MainStreets Annapolis Partnership or to inquire about use of the Holiday Pocket Park, please contact Lisa Craig, Main Street Coordinator, at 410-263-7941 or mainstreet@annpolis.gov or visit our website at www.mainstreetsannapolis.org .

Sponsored by American Express, Small Business Saturday is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.
