The City of Annapolis held its first youth Bicycle Rodeo on May 21st, 2010 for students at West Annapolis Elementary School. Over 75 students took part in the event, which was organized by the Department of Transportation and the Annapolis Police Department.
The Bicycle Safety Rodeo is geared to all students. Its objective is to teach children the importance of seeing, being seen, and remaining in control at all times when riding a bike. This is achieved through a series of bike handling drills and the simulation of traffic situations. The Safe Routes Instructor from the Annapolis Police Department—certified by the League of American Bicyclists-- begins each rodeo with an explanation of what we expect students to demonstrate. Various stations are set up to give students the opportunity to practice a variety of specific bike handling skills and procedures for operating a bike safely and legally on the street.
