The fitness staff of the Roger W. "Pip" Moyer Community Recreation Center (PMRC) are available to help you with your fitness goals. If you have any specific questions or concerns regarding physical training or scheduling, please call 410.263.7958 and ask to speak with a Fitness Specialist. Jo lives by the philosophy that exercise is good for the mind, body and soul. Applying exercise to our everyday lives is one of the most important things we can do, and Jo employs this focus in all her training sessions. As a 4-year, NCAA-Division II student-athlete, Jo has the experience and skill to help find the inner-athlete in all of us. Jo has also played professional basketball in Germany’s Second League Women’s Division, and is a licensed massage therapist. Jo can be reached at jbgosnell@annapolis.gov.

Jennifer Jennings

Jennifer Jennings, Community Health and Aquatics Coordinator

Jen focuses on individualizing her training programs to educate each client on the importance of strength training, cardiovascular endurance and proper nutrition. This enables her clients to see results and live a healthy and more productive life.

Jen is the program director for the PMRC fitness classes, personal trainers, Truxtun Park pool, Truxtun Youth Triathlon, Mighty Milers and ACHIEVE, the CDC-awarded grant program. She leads the City in the Michelle Obama "Let's Move!" initiative and is currently implementing a healthy vending program.

Fitness Class Instructors


Laurie Barlow - Group Cycle / Weekend Ride

Laurie has two spin/cycle certifications through Mad Dogg Athletics and Keiser M3. She is also Group Fitness Certified through the National Exercise Training Association. Laurie has been teaching spin/cycle classes in the Annapolis area since 2010.
Living in Annapolis since 1985, she is a retired flight attendant with USAirways. Laurie and her husband Ken have one daughter, Kristie, who lives in Atlanta. The Barlows enjoy spending their vacations at their house in the mountains of Boone, North Carolina.

Linda Barrett - Total Body Conditioning/Work Your Core Combo, Evening Yin Yang Yoga

Born and raised in Annapolis as a little girl, Linda started taking ballet, tap, jazz and gymnastics, which she continued for many years. In addition, she played a variety of sports and ran road races up and down the East Coast, including the Marine Corps Marathon. In 1985, she became a certified Group Fitness instructor. Now, Linda teaches Zumba, Zumba Gold, Turbo Kick, core and total body strength training, yoga and aqua yoga.

Sheila Carroll - Indoor Cycling (substitute)
A native to the area, and fitness industry for 15 years, Sheila has been teaching indoor cycling ("spin") classes for the past 10 years. In her spare time, she enjoys participating in triathlons, running races, golfing, live music and spending time at the beach with her dog Murphy. Her favorite part of teaching indoor cycling is introducing her students to new music!

Barbara Devitt - Yin Yang Yoga, Yoga Fundamentals, Vinyasa Yoga Level I
Barbara began studying anusara and therapeutic yoga with Jenny Otto in the days when there was only one yoga studio in Annapolis. In 2008, she completed teacher training at Golden Heart and earned the RYT-200 designation. Barbara has continued to study therapeutic yoga, and in 2012, added an intensive training with Tina Lanzoni in Yin/Yang Yoga. She is currently working toward the RYT-500 designation in Yin Yoga.
A long-term student of sacred literature and spirituality, Barbara helps train new yoga instructors teachers in Yoga Philosophy with workshops on the Bhagavad Gita. She has studied dance meditation in the Gurdjieff Tradition, and she's also a Usui method Reiki Master. Barbara was one of the first yoga instructors to teach at PMRC.

Tom Donlin - Express Indoor Cycling, Weekend Ride
Tom has been involved in health and fitness for nearly four decades. A graduate of Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Health and Physical Education, he has been Physical Education teacher, Coach and Referee for high schools. During that time, Tom also became a Certified Athletic Trainer and worked with athletes on the collegiate level. He enjoys a career in the field of Recreation and Parks Management and is currently the Executive Director of the Maryland Recreation and Parks Association. Tom also teaches graduate level courses in Recreation and Parks Management.
He has been an active participant in team sports including baseball, softball and volleyball, and individual sports of road running where he completed several triathlons and a marathon. He now concentrates on distance cycling with his wife Joy. Tom and Joy have two adult sons who were also college athletes. As a cyclist he has completed more than a dozen century rides (100 miles) and numerous shorter events.
Tom has been leading indoor cycling classes at various gyms and health clubs in the Annapolis area for the past eight years receiving an initial certification through Schwinn. He has a further certification specific to the Keiser M3 bike, the model utilized at PMRC.

Kirsten Meister - Cycle

Kirsten has been teaching group fitness classes, including, cardio fitness, weight training, Pilates, yoga, kickboxing, spinning and water aerobics since 2010. She has worked in a wide variety of fitness atmospheres including working in Jamaica. During the summer she hosts a kayaking camp for kids; in the winter, she enjoys skiing. Kirsten is an experienced athlete herself and played three Varsity level sports, soccer, ice hockey and lacrosse throughout her high school and college career.

Leslie Nichols - Barbell Weight Training, Cardio Step & Sculpt, Total Fitness
Leslie is AFAA-certified in group fitness, and holds certifications in step aerobics and strength training. She has been teaching for four years. Before having children, she was a daily runner and swimmer, but fell in love with group fitness after having her first child and finding time to run a challenge. She joined a gym, started taking classes and  never looked back!
Leslie grew up in Howard County and attended Duke University for her undergraduate degree and completed a master's degree in Public Policy from Georgetown University. She moved to Annapolis after graduate school and met her husband Chris. They have five children: Will (9), Anna (7), Caroline (5), and Joseph (2) and born this spring.

Lisa O'Leary - Group Cycle/Group Cycle Pedal/Weekend Ride
Lisa has been instructing a variety of fitness and movement classes for children and adults since 1983, and has taught indoor cycling since 2005. Her undergraduate degrees include a Bachelor of Arts in Dance/Performance with a strong emphasis on kinesiology and biomechanics. Also, Lisa has worked as a field paramedic.
Schwinn, Keiser and ICG trained, Lisa is passionate about indoor cycling and training “with power.” She enjoys offering her riders a wide range of class profiles, from hill-work classes to flat-work intervals and tempo rides. Her riders maintain that she’s equally passionate about the music she plays.
Lisa is an avid mountain biker, whitewater enthusiast, cook and traveler. Her favorite times are those spent in the mountains with her husband, son and dog.

Alana Roach - Yoga for Energy, Power Yoga, Happy Hour Yoga
Alana embarked on a journey in 2009 that would change her life forever… Discovering her own practice in yoga, meditation, reiki, and breath work led to her the realization that in order to deepen her own practice, she would need to pass it on to others. After traveling to India for three months in 2011, Alana returned to the U.S. absolutely certain of her path and received her Yoga Teacher Certification. She has been teaching full time ever since. Alana’s passion and devotion for yoga has made her a versatile teacher. Whether you desire a challenge in a Power Yoga class or would like to relax and restore with Yoga for Energy, Alana will meet you at your yoga level each time!

Kate Sanford - Turn Back the Clock, Yoga for the Older Adult
Kate is Fitness and Yoga instructor (accredited yoga instructor through Shiva Rae Vinyassa Flow Yoga) as well as a Personal Trainer (accredited through National Strength Professionals Association.) Kate was the Fitness/Wellness coordinator at Baywoods of Annapolis Retirement and Assisted Living August 2007-2010.

Mary Slidell - Aerobics
With a dance background and a BA in art history from Connecticut College, Mary has been teaching Jacki Sorensen's fitness programs for more than 30 years. She is a co-owner of The Giant Peach, a children's clothing and gift boutique shop in West Annapolis. Mary and her husband John have been longtime residents of downtown Annapolis and have three adult children and six grandchildren.

Suzanne Stringer - Body Work Challenge

Suzanne is an ACE-Certified Group Fitness Instructor, and is also certified in CPR/AED. For five seasons, Suzanne was the head coach for Girls on the Run. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Maryland, and has a Mathematics Certification for grades 5-12.
Suzanne’s goal is to provide others with challenging -- yet fun -- workouts to give participants inspiration and to challenge each other to achieve health and fitness goals. She encourages people to follow a good fitness routine so that they're better able to face life's challenges using a more positive and optimistic outlook.
