About the Auxiliary Unit

APD BannerWho are Auxiliaries?  Auxiliaries are community members that are interested in serving Annapolis City residents through volunteer police service.  Our auxiliaries hold other full time jobs in the community and donate their time to the Annapolis Police Department in a voluntary capacity.  Auxiliaries come from every walk of life – teachers, students, retired, private industry professionals or public service workers.  The diversity of our unit adds to the range of services we provide.

What do they do?  Members of the Auxiliary Unit are authorized to carry out many functions around the department.  The auxiliary unit assists the Annapolis Police Department with weekly community fingerprinting, community patrol, special events (football games, parades and runs), radar and additional functions.  Members also join career police officers on patrol on occasion.  Auxiliary members are not authorized with the power of arrest and do not carry weapons.

What is the commitment?  Auxiliaries are required to commit at least 10 hours per month in voluntary service; however most go well above and beyond.

How do I join?  All Auxiliaries must apply.  All members must go through a thorough background investigation including drug screening.  If you are interested the unit please contact Capt. Cynthia Howard at 410-268-9000 or choward@annapolis.gov with the information above for further information.
