“Introduction to Complete Streets: What Does It Mean for Annapolis?”
Alex Pline, Bicycle Advocates For Annapolis & Anne Arundel County ("BikeAAA")

Topic:

Streets are a vital part of livable, attractive communities. Everyone, regardless of age, ability, income, race, or ethnicity, ought to have safe, comfortable, and convenient access to community destinations and public places–whether walking, driving, bicycling, or taking public transportation. But too many of our streets are designed only for speeding cars or, worse, creeping traffic jams.  Complete Streets integrates people and place in the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of our transportation networks. There is no "one size fits all" recipe for implementation of Complete Streets as the solutions are very dependent on the local area. This talk will give a primer on Complete Streets in general and discuss specific successes and challenges in the City of Annapolis.

About the Speaker:

Alex Pline is a 20 year resident of Annapolis. He holds BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and has worked at NASA for almost 30 years in fluid mechanics research, science management and information technology. He is an avid cyclist and sailor and loves living in a place that he can walk and bike on a daily basis instead of driving. He is passionate about urban planning/transportation and has been involved in local activities as co-Chair of the Anne Arundel County Transportation Commission (2014), Anne Arundel County Complete Streets Working Group, the Annapolis Transportation Board and is a founding member of Bicycle Advocates for Annapolis and Anne Arundel County.
