2009 Window Restoration College Training Program
Made its Mark in Annapolis
The City hosted its first five-day Wooden Window Restoration College in August of 2009.
The Window Restoration College made a significant impact in the lives of ten students, which included eight Sherwin Williams Home-Work Paint Program graduates: Irvin Crowdy, Eric Downs, Troy Hammond, Terren Makell, Guy B. Massey, Sr., Donell Phillips, Craig Wilson and Norman Woolfolk, II. The group was rounded out with two city employees from Recreation and Parks, Billy Roberts and Scott Stallings.
The Window Restoration College, sponsored by the Mayor’s Office of Youth and Community Affairs, partnered with the Department of Recreation and Parks in concert with Mr. Bob Yapp, president of Preservation Resources, Inc.
Bob is nationally recognized as one of the nation’s top experts in window restoration and has restored over 5,000 windows in his 35-year career.
As stated by Bob Yapp, “In five days these students restored five double-hung window units in the old City sewage station, at Back Creek, from beginning to end. This created an opportunity for both learning and helping save original windows in historic, residential or commercial properties. Over 6 million old wood window sashes end up in our landfills every year. As our new, green economy ramps up across the country, retaining original windows will become even more viable as a trade.” Students worked side-by-side with instructor Bob Yapp. “This has been an intense, learn-by-doing opportunity,” says Mr. Yapp.
The training included sash removal, lead safe paint and glass removal, epoxy and wood repair, glazing putty application, weather stripping and sash installation. Each student received a “Certificate of Completion” from Preservation Resources, Inc.
The Office of Youth and Community Affairs is dedicated to seeking projects that will assist with job training, skill-building and obtaining gainful employment.
