Route 50 at I97- All East Bound lanes are open at this time

Temporary repairs have been made to Rt50 @ I97. All East Bound lanes are open at this time.

Below is the SHA press release from last evening highlighting the circumstances of the closure:

An SHA team including engineers, a geologist and shop technicians responded immediately to reports Wednesday, June 4, on of a pavement void between the left and center lanes of US 50. After thorough assessment, the team has concluded that a metal pipe, associated with the drainage system along US 50, has deteriorated and collapsed, which then created the surface pavement void.

Crews will fill the void with stone, and then place a concrete patch on the road surface. The roadway cavity measures approximately 24 inches in diameter and is several feet deep. SHA hydraulics department will begin design work for more permanent repairstomorrowmorning.

After the void was discovered by a driver around 5 p.m. and reported to Maryland State Police, two left lanes along eastbound US 50 were closed immediately; all lanes were closed within minutes thereafter.
