Mayor Urges Residents and Businesses to Prepare for Hurricane Season

Annapolis, MD (5-23-14) Annapolis Mayor Mike Pantelides and the Annapolis Office of Emergency Management urge citizens and local businesses to be prepared for the 2014 Hurricane Season during National Hurricane Preparedness Week from Sunday, May 25, through Saturday, May 31.

“This is a great time to prepare your family for the possibility of severe weather and to prepare a plan for your pets and property as well,” Mayor Pantelides said.

National Hurricane Preparedness Week is a week-long campaign that provides an opportunity for emergency management experts to educate everyone about this year’s hurricane season outlook and how to prepare in advance.  The Atlantic Hurricane Season begins on June 1 and runs through November 30.

The prediction for this year is a near-normal or below-normal season. “It only takes one major storm to disrupt life as we know it,” Office of Emergency Management Deputy Chief Kevin J. Simmons said. “We’ve learned a lot from our responses to severe weather over the past few years and the first line of defense is a prepared Annapolitan.”

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration there will be 8 to 13 named storms this season with winds of 39 mph or higher. Three to six of those storms could become hurricanes with winds of 74 mph or higher and one to two could become a major hurricane with winds of 111 mph or higher.  These numbers are near or below the seasonal averages of 12 named storms, six hurricanes and three major hurricanes, based on the average from 1981 to 2010.

The City of Annapolis Office of Emergency Management offers the following hurricane preparedness tips for Annapolis residents and businesses:

  • Sign up for CodeRED Alerts – Emergency Management officials encourage residents to register for CodeRED at  or call 410-216-9167. The City of Annapolis uses the CodeRED Alert network to immediately deliver important alerts, notifications and updates to residents’ and businesses’ cell phones, landlines, texts and e-mails during an emergency or major crisis.
  • Functional Needs Registry -   The Office of Emergency Management encourages residents with special needs to register with the Functional Needs Registry for disasters at 410-216-9167. The Functional Needs Registry is a free, voluntary and confidential program designed to assist people with special needs who may find it difficult to get to safety in the event of an emergency.
  • Prepare an Emergency Supply Kit – Keep enough supplies in your home to survive for at least three days. If possible, keep these materials in an easily accessible, separate container or special cupboard.   • Pack a Go-Bag – A Go-Bag should be a collection of items you need in the event of an evacuation. A Go-Bag should be packed in a sturdy, easy to carry container such as a backpack or suitcase on wheels. Items to be considered include, but are not limited to, copies of important documents in a waterproof and portable container, bottled water and non-perishable food, flashlight and battery operated AM/FM radio. Don’t forget pet supplies and food.
  • Develop a Disaster Plan for Families – A disaster plan will ensure your family members know what to do, how to find each other, and how to communicate in an emergency. Helpful suggestions in developing your family’s disaster plan can be found at
  • Develop a Disaster Plan for Businesses – Preparing makes good business sense. How quickly your company can get back to business after an emergency or crisis depends on emergency planning done today.
