Annapolis Police Warn Drivers – Buckle Up Day and Night

Click it or Ticket to occur around the clock in Maryland

Click it or Ticket has been a staple of Maryland law enforcement for many years, and more than 91 percent of Maryland residents are happy to comply with the state’s primary seat belt law according to roadside surveys.  However, far too many drivers and passengers are failing to buckle up during the night time hours, a time when roadways are more likely to be shared with impaired or drowsy drivers.

In fact, more than 50 percent of Maryland’s nighttime passenger vehicle fatality victims were not wearing seat belts during the past five years of available data.  In comparison, that number in the daytime is 34 percent.  Seat belts are the only way to protect vehicle occupants in a crash.  The chances of being killed are almost 25 times greater when thrown from the vehicle and the forces in a collision can be enough to throw a person as much as 150 feet –about 15 car lengths.

The focus of this month’s Click It or Ticket campaign is to get drivers to buckle up day and night.  But motorists should know that Officers from Annapolis Police Department are out enforcing seat belt laws year-round.  In fact, law enforcement across the state issued more than 90,000 citations for seat belt use last year, with many conducting high visibility enforcement during the night time hours as well.  Night time seat belt enforcement has been proven to also lead to additional criminal enforcement, as it is not uncommon to detect impaired drivers, and seat belt stops have also resulted in drug arrests, fugitive apprehensions, the recovery of stolen vehicles, and offenses involving weapons.

Seat belts save lives, but only when worn and worn properly.  And that goes for passengers in the back seat who are more likely to seriously injure or kill front seat occupants in a crash when they ride in a vehicle while unbelted.   Wearing your seat belt costs nothing and takes two seconds to put on.  Not wearing it could cost you money, and worse it can cost you your life or the life of a loved one or friend.  Buckle up, every trip, every time – day and night!

About Click It or Ticket

Maryland’s Click It or Ticket high-visibility enforcement efforts begin during the second week of May and will continue through the end of the month.  As a special emphasis, every year during the Memorial Day holiday period, law enforcement agencies join forces day and night, from coast-to-coast, in an enforcement blitz encouraging citizens to buckle up. Sponsored by NHTSA, Click It or Ticket is the most successful seat belt enforcement campaign in history, helping to raise national seat belt use. The mobilization is supported by national and local paid advertising and earned media campaigns aimed at raising awareness throughout the nation. To learn more, please visit
